About This Calculator
This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula based on veterinary nutritional science: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This metabolic formula is more accurate than simple weight-based calculations because it accounts for the non-linear relationship between body size and energy needs.
The RER is then multiplied by an activity factor to determine the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER). Active dogs, working dogs, and puppies need more calories per kilogram than sedentary dogs. The final food amount is calculated by dividing the MER by the caloric density of your specific dog food, giving you a precise daily portion in grams.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is RER and MER?
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the calories your dog needs at complete rest. MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) is the total daily calories needed, accounting for activity level, age, and other factors.
How do I find the caloric density of my dog food?
Check the label on your dog food bag or can. It should list kcal/cup or kcal/kg. Divide kcal/kg by 1000 to get kcal/g. Most dry dog foods range from 3.5 to 4.0 kcal/g.
Should I feed my dog 2 or 3 meals per day?
Most adult dogs do well with 2 meals per day. Puppies under 6 months should eat 3-4 meals daily. Large breed dogs may benefit from 2-3 smaller meals to reduce bloat risk.
