Cat Calorie Calculator

Determine exactly how many calories your cat needs daily. Get personalized recommendations for wet and dry food portions.

About This Calculator

Cats have specific caloric needs based on their metabolic rate, which is calculated using the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This formula is widely used in veterinary nutrition and accounts for the non-linear relationship between body size and metabolism.

The RER is then adjusted based on your cat's reproductive status and health goals. Neutered cats typically need fewer calories (factor 1.2), while intact cats need more (1.4). For weight management, the factor is reduced to 1.0, and for weight gain, it's increased to 1.6. The calculator also provides wet and dry food equivalents based on average caloric densities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does my cat need per day?

An average neutered adult cat needs about 200-300 kcal/day depending on weight. Use our calculator for a precise recommendation based on your cat's specific weight and status.

Should I feed wet or dry food?

Both can work. Wet food provides hydration and is closer to a cat's natural diet. Dry food is convenient and helps dental health. Many owners feed a combination. Our calculator shows portions for both options.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

Use the Body Condition Score (BCS) system: you should be able to feel your cat's ribs without pressing hard, and see a visible waist from above. If you can't feel ribs easily, your cat may be overweight. Consult your vet for guidance.
